BEST PRACTICES
NANCY GREENE SKI LEAGUE
Recruitment activity and preparedness varies from club to club with demographics and location contributing to the overall success of an event or a clubs development. “Word of Mouth” is the most successful way to bring in new people no matter where the club is based.
The success of any program depends on solid organization, communication and follow up with potential parents. Nothing retains kids/parents and recruits new parents by “word of mouth” better that a well designed and implemented program.

Rookie Camps – One club runs this program and offers a 3-week trial period for potential members. For the allotted time children participate in the club program. After the 3 weeks parents have the choice to join for the remainder of the season or walk away.
One Head coach believes that success of the program depends on solid organization, communication and follow up with potential parents. Typically, the Rookie Camp attracts 50 children and the club will retain at a minimum of half.
Parents Day – This is an opportunity for the club to inform and educate their parent group. The club provides a full day of instruction on NGSL skills and an introduction to racing that the parents participate in. This helps increase the level of parental awareness and understanding of what is happening out on the hill for the children.
NGSL Handout – One club communicates basic information to current and potential NGSL parents. They have accomplished this by providing each family with a two page handout that covers topics such as “what does my child need for skiing?” and “a typical day at their mountain”. This answers the basic questions parents have coming into the program and delivers the club message in bite size chunks.
Bring A Friend – Run by a club, this event encourages each NGSL child to bring their friend with them for night skiing. The club provides programming to all the children and their friends. The club provides exposure to its programs to families who have an interest in skiing and a child who has a friend in the program.
Community Events – One small club participates in local events such as the Teacher’s Convention and the Christmas Parade. Each event the club feels is worthy of being involved because of the exposure and awareness level within the community.
Club Sleep Over – One club organizes an evening of Tubing, Movies, Pop Corn and Sleep Over. NGSL children can bring a friend and have a night at the ski area.
Teen Dance – One club organizes a teen dance for the community at the lodge. This is an opportunity to bring local children/teens from the community out to the hill. This helps raise the awareness level of the club and ski area to a traditional farming/ranching community.
Grades 3, 4 & 5 Festival – This event is run by the local club and is a free day of skiing for children in grades 3, 4 & 5. Canada Olympic Park provides complimentary lift tickets to all participating children and the club organizes the activities out on the snow. The activities are self-guided and the children follow a passport that is given to them at registration. Each station they participate in they will be given a stamp on their passport. At the end of the day they return their passports for a prize bag that includes information about the club.
Jasper Junior Olympics (JJO) – This event is open to all NGSL children from the north zone. This year over 300 children participated in this two day event that incorporates individual/team and dual events. There are two race courses on the mountain to accommodate the numbers and the children are split into the groups according to their age.
Why is this event so fun? Because
· Imagine a ski event where you ski more than you stand around
· The event is simple and everyone knows what is happening
· Every child leaves the weekend with a t-shirt, medal and team picture
· The top 3 team are recognized with a JJO plague
· Special JJO “cow” bell medals are distributed for individual awards
· The tail gate party on the last day is great
· The children loved to visit with
· This event is a joint effort by the north zone and there is a real sense of community
Spring Festival at
Greene, will be part of the festivities for the two-day event for all BC Alpine E1, E2 and Alcan NGSL
members. Those attending the Husky Snow Stars Festival will have the chance to socialize with Nancy Greene while testing their skiing skills in a moguls, jumping, obstacle course and the popular RCMP Speed
Trap skill stations. Additionally, all children registered for this event will match up in a "Dual Super
Slalom". The goal of the Husky Snow Star Festival and the Alcan Nancy Greene Ski League is to
celebrate the progress of skiers and ski racers of all ability levels through the Husky Snow Stars
program in an enjoyable and rewarding environment.
